Tower Defence clone to feature shiny graphics and touchscreen controls

Square Enix raises the ramparts for Crystal Defenders, its first iPhone game

Building on the success of its iPod titles, Square Enix has officially announced plans to enter the iPhone market with its first game, entitled Crystal Defenders.

The game puts a twist on the classic Tower Defence formula with touchscreen controls and amazing visuals. According to Famitsu, Square Enix touts the game as a "defence simulation."

Screenshots accompanying the publication's story showcase full screen maps with trails for enemies to march along. Plunking down defensive structures is presumably done with a tap of your finger; however, none of the shots give an indication of exactly how the interface functions.

Currently Crystal Defenders has only been announced for Japanese release sometime this winter, although we're hoping that a US and UK debut will follow shortly thereafter. We'll naturally keep you posted.
