Crossword puzzles are a great idea for the handheld platforms, but they're stymied (4 Across: To prevent somebody or something from making further progress) by an eventual lack of words.

This is the real appeal of the latest iPhone game, which downloads new crosswords to your handset each day. They also come loaded with hints, clues and an option to track your improvement.

The new puzzles are provided by a variety of newspapers, so it's unlikely there'll be any particular concerns over quality – though it's worth noting these will be US newspapers. Most crosswords should cross the pond quite transparently, of course, but bear in mind your spelling (since Americans don't write proper like what we do) and the fact that baseball questions might also crop up.

As a handy Pocket Gamer hint for anyone who does come afoul of a baseball question, the World Series is only played in America, and only features American teams. That should get you through 2 down. You're welcome.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
