07 Commando blasting its way onto DS

We'd be lying if we said that, on occasion, the fine words you read on Pocket Gamer are inspired by a particular writing style we may have encountered in a book, magazine article or even heard from a film's script. And we're obviously not the only ones – individuals in all walks of life take inspiration from the things they come across in their day-to-day existence.

As such, we can't be too hard on Chinese developer Mana Computer Software for presenting what, on the surface, appears suspiciously similar to SNK's Metal Slug 2D side-scrolling shooting series.

Like SNK's much-revered franchise, 07 Commando features a distinct, cartoon-like visual style, numerous enemy sprites onscreen, a variety of weapons and item pick-ups, and large end-of-level mechanised bosses.

But it's not an exact replica. In addition to the standard shooting, jumping and explosive throwing, central character Storm can also resort to a rolling manoeuvre in order to dodge enemy strikes, which could bring an interesting new dynamic to the action.

The gameplay also promises dynamic weather effects and some surprises to keep you on your toes, though likely to prove more interesting is the revelation that collectables found in levels will open hidden missions. That, and the fact that touchscreen-based, time-limited mini-games are also included.

At other times, the touchscreen confines itself to displaying the game map, while the action rages on above it.

The developer claims a "fluent and smooth presentation", crucial for this type of experience. And if it can also nail Metal Slug's renowned gameplay, DS owners could be in for a surprise treat.
