SEGA spins Charlotte's Web on to DS, GBA and mobile

SEGA spins Charlotte's Web on to DS, GBA and mobile

We're not scared of spiders at Pocket Gamer. Not even talking spiders that hang out with equally chatty pigs, rats and other precocious farmyard animals of the sort that star in Charlotte's Web, the upcoming Paramount movie remake that's also coming to DS, GBA and mobile phones courtesy of SEGA.

Now, put us with them in a confined space in an aeroplane with a snake or two, and then you'll have us wobbling…

Not that Charlotte's Web is about fear. A sort of Watership Down for archinids, the original 1973 film and multimillion-selling children's book made spiders cuddly. We presume the new film will too, especially as SEGA is describing its game versions as 'enchanting'.

Playing as either Wilbur the pig or Templeton the rat, you'll explore four worlds – Zuckerman's Barn, a Junkyard, the Countryside and the County Fair – each made up of numerous levels.

Characters from the movie will make an appearance too. You'll meet Charlotte herself, Wilbur's best mate, who has lost her baby spiders (looked down the plughole, love?), and Gussy the goose, who has mislaid her goslings (parental standards are clearly slipping down on the farm).

The handheld versions get mini-games too, such as the daringly named 'Ring Toss', hidden about the levels. Extras that take advantage of the DS's unique capabilities are promised, including stylus support and four-player wireless multiplayer, and there's also an unlockable mini-game that sees you play as schoolgirl Fern, charged with caring for Wilbur.

"This captivating game will give players of all ages the opportunity to explore the charming and familiar world of Charlotte's Web like never before," said an apparently smitten Scott A. Steinberg of SEGA of America.

The game version of Charlotte's Web is being created for SEGA by US studio Backbone Entertainment. It's due to ensnare us this autumn.
