There are an increasing number of card and board games for iPad; one such is Castle Combat HD.

It's a two player card-based game, and strategic in terms of the way you use your resources, either to build up your defenses or attack your opponent.

In simple terms, this means building up the strength of your castle to 100 or reducing your opponent's castle to 0.

Balance of extremes

The real strategy element of the game occurs as you're each dealt five upfacing cards, which feature actions such as building up your castle and fences, attacking your enemy directly, or stealing their resources.

Each card played requires you to use up some of your resources, which are broken down into four areas, weapons, stone, wood, and magic. Each resource is supported by appropriate workers - wizards for magic, soldiers for armies etc - and at the end of each round, you're awarded more resources depending on how many workers you have for each attribute.

Hence, the deeper gameplay has you trying to use your resources in the most efficient way, while also targetting your opponent's workers so they run out of usable resources.

Together with the randomness of the cards, which are dealt out one per turn (you can also discard), it all makes for a fairly thoughtful experience.

You can play either in single player mode against the game's artificial intelligence or two people head-to-head on the same iPad.

Castle Combat HD is out now, priced $1.99, €1.59 or £1.19.
