Now here's a game our economically-retarded politicians could do with playing a few rounds of. Build-a-lot is a hit casual game from HipSoft (original version pictured) that takes a lead from SimCity and Monopoly, putting you in charge of building profitable housing schemes.

Despite the rather economic undertones of a game based on the housing market, Build-a-lot is quite light escapism and should fit the mobile platform very nicely when Glu brings it to the US market. (That's not to say it won't come to Europe.)

"Build-a-lot was one of 2007's most critically and commercially successful online casual games. We are excited to build upon the online title's success with the mobile game," says Jill Braff, senior vice president of Glu. "Glu brings a world-class development organization, strong marketing team and deep carrier relationships to the partnership, and we look forward to working with HipSoft's creative team to replicate the Build-a-lot online hit on mobile."

If you like to spend your weekday mornings watching programmes about how average people can shed excess cash by developing property, hit 'Track It!' so you get news of the mobile equivalent as soon as it comes in.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
