With most games it's perfectly clear what makes them enjoyable, addictive, fascinating or even annoying, but Danny Millar and Jacob Thurman's hit Flash game, Boomshine, is something of an enigma.

It's very difficult to tell what actually makes this incredibly simple game so addictive – other than the significant amount of time you lose to it.

And now Boomshine has found its way onto the App Store. The game involves placing an expanding dot on the playing field in a strategic location.

When the other floating dots hit it (before it quickly dissolves) they too expand, causing a chain reaction and eliminating as many coloured disks as possible.

Simple as that – one click, and you're done, but over 20 million games of Boomshine have been played online since 2007, which speaks volumes about its unhealthily addictive nature.

But as is often the case with such basic puzzlers, it's massively addictive.

Head on over to the browser-based version if you want to see for yourself, and don't forget to hit the 'Track It!' button for more info on the iPhone version as we cover it.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
