There's something eminently likeable about The Horus Heresy: Legions. Even if you're not a fan of the Games Workshop license it's built around, it's a brilliant card game that plays around with the makeup of the genre to great effect. Plus it's got dreadnoughts in it. I love dreadnoughts.

If you're just starting off in the game though, things can be a little bit overwhelming, so we thought we'd put together a handy guide that's going to make some of the things you need to be doing a little clearer.

If you've got your own tips, then feel free to share them in the comments below. Or don't bother, if you're traitorous Chaos scum. We don't want your sort around here anyway (we do really, please stay, love you).

Know your warlord

As you unlock more warlords, you'll start to experiment with what they can do. It's important to get to grips with their strengths and weaknesses so you're not just charging off into the deep end without a clue where the bottom is.

Find a warlord that suits your play-style, and build a deck around the pros and cons that they have. Warlords with less HP need defending, stronger warlords can go for all out attack, but against a smart opponent you'll need to have some tricks up your sleeve too.

Check the different powers that the different warlords have as well. Using these wisely is the key to success. Don't hit someone in the face when you can shoot them with a massive gun, for example.

Balance your deck

It's tempting to throw all the awesome cards you get into your deck straight away. Do that and you'll find yourself playing a lot of games where you can't do anything for the first few rounds and end up taking a severe trouncing.

By all means field some chunky units to use in the later stages of the game, but make sure you've got plenty of cheaper soldiers and actions that are going to let you build up to the throwing-a-spaceship-in-someone's-face coup de grace.

Play smart

Get to know all of the cards in your deck, and figure out the best way to lay them when they come into your hand. If you're playing two cards in a round, and one of them gets a boost every time you put a unit into play, then you're wasting a boon if you play it second.

Playing smart means making sure that you're taking every advantage that the game offers to you. Your opponent is going to be doing exactly the same, so take a second and make sure there's not a better way to do things.

Buy new cards

You get a decent amount of currency from just playing the game, more than enough to get you a pack or two of cards during every session. These are the bread and butter of your deck, and you need to grab them whenever you can.

If you wait for free drops then it's likely that you're going to be overwhelmed, so head over to the shop and get new packs whenever you've got the money. And make sure you play through the daily missions to earn more if you get the chance.

Join a lodge

It might seem a bit intimidating at first, but joining a lodge is a great way to get even more rewards, and it puts you in contact with other players who are going to be able to help you if you've got questions about the game.

If you're still unsure, why not save up the 100 coins and start your own lodge, that way you can invite all of your friends and not have to deal with internet randoms.

The best part of being in a lodge is you get to play practice matches. These will let you hone your skills without risking anything, and they're definitely worth it.
