 BOARD GAME FEATURE

The 5 things we'd like to see more of in digital board games in 2018

While we've already had a look at some of the most exciting board games that are coming to mobile in 2018, now we're going to have a look at some of the trends we hope to see taking over the digital board game world in the next 12 months.

Hopefully we'll see some of these happening, but feel free to share your own ideas in the comments section down at the bottom of the article. And here's to an exciting, and dicey, 2018!

More AR

AR is one of the most interesting technological changes we've seen in the smartphone world in the past few years. And the possibilities for board games are really impressive.

From playing on a board projected on your table, to getting different vantage points on the action, hopefully some devs are going to take the tech and make it as exciting as it has the potential to be.

Stand-alone digital games

If 2017 has shown us anything, it's that a game doesn't have to be based on a physical product to work on mobile.

Hopefully we're going to see more devs releasing games built around board game mechanics that add some interesting twists to genres that we've already played.

Some more big names

That said, there are plenty of games we'd love to see making the shift to digital. There are a lot out there already, but I bet you've got a wish list a mile long of games you'd love to not have to pack up when you've finished with them.

Better family selection

There are a few family games on the App Store, but not as many as we'd like to see. With a bit of luck 2018 will be the year when the tablet replaces the table as the item of choice for when you've got all of your family in one place.

A tablet-top RPG

We'd love to see one of the big tabletop RPGs make their way onto a mobile platform. Imagine a persistent game of D&D that you and friends from around the world could jump into and play online.

Combine that with AR and you could be onto something really special.

Read more: here are five mobile board games coming in 2018 which we're dead excited about. Meanwhile, here's our three-part guide to our favourite digital board games of 2017.
