Looking back on a month in mobile gaming

How was your June? Personally, a combination of some extremely hot weather and the group stages of the World Cup have made for a rather distracting month.

It took a lot for a mobile game to prize my head away from the TV/fridge, is what I'm saying. That some of these games managed that feat says a lot.

Not that it's been an absolute classic month, but we've certainly seen a lot of very creditable efforts.

What have you been playing and enjoying in June? Let us know in the comments below.

1
Card Quest

Available on: iOS + Android
Find out more about Card Quest
Card Quest

A brilliantly balanced dungeon-crawling card game that's both accessible and deep. Perhaps its finest attribute is the way it enables you to experiment with its systems.

2
Feist

Publisher: Last Chance Media
Available on: iOS + Android
Find out more about Feist
Feist

Feist is a beautiful platformer that calls to mind Badland and Limbo with its silhouette style. However, it has plenty of fresh environmental tricks of its own.

3
Super Soccer Champs 2018

Publisher: Uprising Games
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Sports

Super Soccer Champs 2018

Super Soccer Champs 2018 is arguably the best new football action game released during this World Cup season. It nods back to the classic home computer football games, with a deceptive level of depth.

4
Suzy Cube

Available on: iOS + Android

Suzy Cube

We don't get many 3D platformers on mobile, so it's good to see Suzy Cube. Especially as it's a very creditable attempt at the Mario 64 formula.

5
Up Left Out

Publisher: Rainbow Train
Available on: iOS + Android
Find out more about Up Left Out
Up Left Out

Another brilliantly lean yet quietly ingenious puzzler from the maker of HOOK and Klocki. It's a tile-slider, but with a bunch of clever little twists and impeccable execution.

6
Only When Howling

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Puzzle
Find out more about Only When Howling
Only When Howling

More of an interactive art piece than an out and out game, Only When Howling is nonetheless a truly unique experience. It won't be to everyone's tastes, but there's nothing else quite like it on mobile.

7
Westworld

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Simulation
Find out more about Westworld
Westworld

A game that takes a similar approach to Fallout Shelter in the way that you can build your very own Wild West attraction. The fact that it ties in with the hottest TV show of the moment is a bonus.

8
Look, Your Loot!

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Card battler, Card/board game
Find out more about Look, Your Loot!
Look, Your Loot!

An adventurous card game that has more in common with Threes than Card Quest. While it's not as deep as that other recent gem (see above), Look, Your Loot does what it sets out to do really well.

9
Muse Dash

Publisher: X.D. Network Inc.
Available on: iOS + Android + Switch
Genre: Music/Rhythm
Find out more about Muse Dash
Muse Dash

The autorunner collides with the rhythm action game in Muse Dash, and the results are colourful to say the least. It looks great, with a chunky anime art style, and it's impossible to play without a smile on your face.

10
Istanbul: Digital Edition

Publisher: Acram Sp. z o.o.
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Card/board game, Multiplayer
Find out more about Istanbul: Digital Edition
Istanbul: Digital Edition

This trade-based digital board game takes ages to truly get to grips with. If you put the hard yards in, though, you'll find a rich strategic experience.
