Armello is certainly an interesting game. It's a digital-only board game that plays around with the shape of the genre, and throws in some interesting ideas that make it work like a dream on the App Store.

But it can be a little overwhelming at times, which is why we've thrown together this handy hints and tips guide to make sure that you're on the right track to becoming the new king or queen of the kingdom.

Know your character

It's important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the various characters you can choose from. Some are strong fighters, others use different means to wrest control from the hands of the mad king.

The tutorial section provides a decent primer for the four starting characters, and you'll have to play through that to get to the other sections of the game. Knowing who you're playing as is half of the battle.

Focus, focus, focus

There are a number of different ways to win a game of Armello, but it's easy to get side-tracked chasing all of them and end up losing badly. Figure out the path you want to take, and try your best to stick to it.

There are going to be events that pop up that might make you change your mind, but the turn-based nature of the game means that you're going to be able to switch tack reasonably easily if a new and more exploitable avenue opens up.

Try not to die

Dying might not be the end of the game, but it can throw a real spanner in the works if you're not careful. You'll lose prestige, get booted back to your starting location, and probably lose some cards in the process.

Avoid conflict unless it's absolutely necessary, you're pretty sure you're going to win, or there's no other option out there. The first few turns should definitely be combat free while you build up your character and get stronger.

Choose your cards carefully

A good hand of cards can really set you in good stead for the challenges the game is going to throw at you. And if you tailor it to the goals you're reaching for, you're going to be able to make shorter work of them.

It's always a good idea to draw some item cards early on, as they're useful for buffing up your stats. Don't be afraid to burn cards you don't need to level the stakes when it comes to dice-based challenges. That'll open up more slots for you next turn.

Only fools rush in

Even when the king is weakened, there's still a lot you'll need to do to get to face him in combat. If that's your aim, make sure you're as strong and prepared as you can be. And remember you're going to have to face a number of trials before you even get to the bonkers old lion.

Don't jump into a conflict you're not going to be able to win just because it looks like the other players are doing better in their quests. Take your time, build up your character, and make sure you're in the right place before you strike.
