iPhone 3GS-enhanced version of Blue Skies revealed

We reviewed Rocking Pocket Games's awesome iPhone shoot-'em-up Blue Skies last October just after its release. It was still kinda early days for the App Store back then, and thoughts of enhanced games or new hardware models were a lifetime away.

But now the developer is gearing up to relaunch its popular chopper-based shooter with an enhanced iPhone 3GS version. This new release, which will apparently be separate from the existing 'standard' version of Blue Skies will make use of the pixel shaders that are proving so popular among developers, along with detailed bump maps and realistic, animated water effects.

This enhanced version is currently in submission, and while the value of 3GS-specific software has yet to be proven, it'll be interesting to see how users (and Apple, for that matter - how will it feel about alienating the current crop of iPhone and iPod touch owners?) react to the notion of enhanced 3GS games.

Here are a couple of gameplay videos so you can compare the differences. The top one is the original version of Blue Skies, while the new, enhanced version is beneath it.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
