Due to the first Bloons TD game released for iPhone being based on the third version of the Flash tower defence series, the second iOS release arrives with the number 4 attached to it.

Still, that minor confusion aside, the game's already been played million of times on the web so you know that developer Digital Goldfish, together with Bloons originators Ninja Kiwi, have a solid gameplay foundation to build on.

Darts to the ready

A universal app, Bloons TD 4 features new weapons, towers, upgrades, tracks and challenges, as well as some of the classic Flash maps from the game which enables you to use land, sea and air elements to pop the incoming balloon invasion.

For example, you can call in mortar strikes, deploy monkey fighter aces, and harness the power of banana farms as you take down the enemy in bloon popping fashion. Once you've mastered a map, you also get to play it Freeplay mode.

With 75 levels and 15 maps in total - each with three difficulty settings - achievements and scores are supported in a social manner using Game Center.

Bloons TD 4 is out now for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, priced £1.79, $2.99 or €2.39.

You can also try out the Flash version for free here.
