ARM announces 3 new Mali GPUs that should help to combat fragmentation among app devs
Power to the people
Processor design specialist ARM has announced three all-new Mali-T600 series GPUs for smartphones, tablets, and Smart TVs that will offer at least a 50 per cent increase in performance over the company's previous generation of chips.
The T624, T628, and T678 boast the same silicon area and power draw as their predecessors, and have been created specifically to bring - among other things - "console-class gaming" to mobile devices and TVs.
The T678, which is aimed specifically at tablets, also has a small section of silicon that's dedicated to running a new in-house graphical compression codec called Scalable Texture Compression, which is said to combat the fragmentation issues that app developers frequently encounter.
The chip will aim to eradicate the need for developers to choose multiple codecs in order to achieve different levels of texture compression for the market's varied devices, by supporting a variety of different colour standards, textures, and other technological bits and bobs.
