Rumours have emerged that the Blackberry tablet is not just real, but has been in development for quite some time.

According to ‘multiple sources’ that talked to Boy Genius Report, RIM was originally working on a black and white Kindle competitor back in pre-iPad days before switching development to a full-colour screen to compete against Apple’s magical device.

This new colour model is suggested to be an 8.9” (22.6 cm) tablet that eschews a 3G connection in favour of wi-fi and Bluetooth (though which it can be tethered to your BlackBerry), with a focus on multimedia similar to that of the iPad as opposed to the more business-oriented Blackberry smartphones.

The device is expected to ship in December 2010, but no further information on specs or price range has been unearthed from the dank rumour mine.
