PopCap's site explains how many of the company's employees spend a lot of time battling orcs in their online alternate existences, and therefore decided it could be a good idea to inject a bit of jewel-swapping fun into the World of Warcraft mix.

The popular puzzle game Bejeweled (which is never far from the top spot in the O2 Charts), has been rewritten as a small but fully featured add-on to the massively multiplayer phenomenon. The plug-in is added just like any other, and works by altering the game's interface to include a playable - and completely free - version of Bejeweled. The high scores will be stored online, so players can add Bejeweled scores to their other online achievements for fun and respect.

It does seem like something of a peculiarity that someone would spend all that money on a game like World of Warcraft (and its subscription), only to play a free puzzle game. That said, even a well-run guild can take some organising and rallying, so a quick game of Bejeweled could be preferable to shooting wild boars when stood around waiting for battle.

And you can never have too much Bejeweled anyway, right pocket gamers?

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
