Battlefield: Modern Combat being prepared for 2006 release

Gunning for PSP

Little information has leaked about the PSP version of online team-based first person shooter Battlefield 2: Modern Combat other than the fact it’s in development. The latest tiny snippet from series creator Swedish studio Digital Illusions reveals the game is being worked on by one of EA’s UK teams, believed to be EA Warrington. Work started in April with the current release date set at some point early in 2006.

Based on the PlayStation2/Xbox versions of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, the PSP game will also be set in an all-action warzone in Kazakhstan. There will be a single player mode where you can play both side of the conflict with options including various soldier types such as sniper, heavy weapons expert and scout, as well as the ability to jump into 50 types of vehicles like tanks, hummers and armoured cars.

However, the best part of the game comes with the online mode where - in the console version at least - two teams of 12 players can duke it out. So one of the big unanswered questions for the PSP version of the game will be just how many players the game will support online. So far, 8 players seems to be the limit for PSP multiplayer although it’s believed the system should be able to support up to 16. Here’s hoping for a nice surprise!

PS: don’t believe our exclusive PSP screenshots. We’ve just PSP’ed some Xbox screens to show you what the game might look like.
