High fantasy, turn-based strategy game Battle for Wesnoth has already made the jump from PC Freeware to iPhone, but these screenshots for the upcoming iPad version make Apple's smartphone look positively claustrophobic.

The viewable map area has obviously had a much needed expansion, giving you a huge overview of the terrain and making planning your battle strategies a whole lot easier. The graphics and cut-scene art have also had a major overhaul to take advantage of the iPad's giant screen.

The game offers over 300 hours of gameplay and is often treated to huge, free monthly updates with new campaigns and character types.

Writing on the TouchArcade forum, the developer says "most other games seem to be launching for the iPad at $4.99 or $9.99. So Battle for Wesnoth HD will be $.99" (59p). It will actually be cheaper than the iPhone version which is currently available for £2.99 or $4.99.

Due to online community tool OpenFeint not yet appearing on the big screen, Battle for Wesnoth won't be hitting the iPad on its April 3rd release, but developer Kyle Poole writes that it "should be ready to submit in a few days."
