Vintage shooter fans rejoice, because the European release of Bangai-O Spirits for the DS has been announced.

For those who don't already know about this little gem, it's a classic mash-up of shooting and puzzling that's been largely confined to Japan during its quiet but distinguished life. To play it is to love it.

As well as "addictive shooter gameplay, punishing super-moves and a sensory overload of onscreen fireworks", Bangai-O Spirits boasts a local multiplayer mode for up to four players, a level editor tool for tweaking in-game levels or making new ones from scratch, and the facility for transferring data between your DS and other through the Sound Load feature.

What is it? Listen: "Never before utilized for DS systems, the Sound Load technology in Bangai-O Spirits allows players to transfer level data among DS handheld systems via the use of sound and the DS microphone.

"The technology works by taking the level data and turning it into a sound file which is output through the host DS speaker. This data is then interpreted through the microphone of the recipient DS, and the level transfer is complete."

Isn't that a bit like what happened to young Mike Teevee in the Gene Wilder version of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

It'll be here on August 29th.
