How did it know that was just what we wanted?

It seems brain training games just aren't going to go away until every games publisher in the world has at least one to their name.

Atari has today become the latest to get in on that act, announcing Asterix Brain Trainer for DS. It's the publisher's first brain training title (although clearly it's not a first for DS – more like the 30th) and one that's aimed at younger brains than the likes of Dr Kawashima's Brain Training.

To be fair, Asterix Brain Trainer is looking quite distinctive, largely thanks to the fact it features the famous Gallic cartoon cast, made up of the likes of Getafix, Geriatrix and, of course, Asterix himself.

The game's basic premise is that young Justforkix is learning to become a great warrior but needs some help courtesy of some extra-curricular education. That's where Asterix comes in, to guide him through a host of activities (or mini-games) throughout the village to help him learn what he needs to know to pass his exams.

Different Asterix-world characters will be teaching different subjects, with Unhygenix the smelly fishmonger in charge of food and beverage and Cacofonix the tone-deaf musician teaching arts and music, for instance. Something tells us this plan isn't going to go that well. These subjects are all translated into mini-games, combining puzzles, memory games and other problem solving but in a fun way.

Finally, the game supports four player wi-fi using just one cart, presumably for head-to-head brain-offs and the like.

Asterix Brain Trainer will be released on June 27th across Europe, which is just in time for the school summer holidays. Making them use their brains even when they've got time off – we like it.
