New adventure game comes out of its shell

iPhone's Spore Origins creator releases Armado

We loved Spore Origins on the iPhone, so naturally we're quite antsy to check out anything else coming from the developer of the Apple version, Tricky Software. And here it is: Armado – a handheld adventure game starring a quick-footed armadillo.

From sunny woodlands to snowy peaks and fiery volcanoes, your job is to run and roll Armado to safety amidst an army of obstacles and adversaries. Those familiar with the PC and Mac version will undoubtedly be quite intrigued, especially considering the engine, graphics and (naturally) controls have all received an overhaul for this latest incarnation.

While we think there's a lot of truth in the notion that the spate of ultra-cheap iPhone games could ultimately be damaging to the industry, Armado does adopt a preview system we're very much in favour of – a free 'lite' version. So you'll find Tricky Software has put Armado Lite onto the App Store so you can try before you buy, and we've also got a gameplay video below to whip you up into the prerequisite hard-plated burrowing mammal frenzy. Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
