Roll over Eliminate. Archetype's gunning for you
iPhone gets a brand new iPwnage shooter
In an App Store increasingly dominated by quirky puzzlers and console brands, it's good to see something original and high quality being announced.
That's certainly the deal with Archetype, an online multiplayer FPS shooter for iPhone and iPod touch that's being published by new outfit Villain and developed by MunkyFun, set up by ex-LucasArts staff.
Shoot my bitch upLike Eliminate but with go-faster stripes, Archetype throws you into the team-based deathmatches as a cadet.
As you fight, you build up your reputation, earn experience points, and win medals. For example, each match awards a Most Valuable Player medal.
Up to ten players can fight at any time, with the numbers scaling between two to five players per team across five levels.
Of course, what's more interesting is the weaponry, with Archetype launching with six types ranging from rapid-fire guns, missile launchers, a melee axe and two grenade types including a split-strike grenade that splits in two every time it bounces. Sounds messy.
Get connectedThe game's online features have been built using a proprietary server system that will handle rank-based team matchmaking, buddy lists, and radar-based enemy tracking.
It promises to work over wi-fi, 3G, and even Edge connections; something we'll be keen to test.
You can see some more pretty pictures over on the game's website.
Archetype is due to be released in early July, priced $2.99, €2.39 or £1.79.
