Citing an Asian supplier and a source in the US, Japanese website Macotakara reported last month that Apple would unveil the iPad 3 and iOS 5.1 at a special event sometime in February.

According to the author of the report, Danbo, however, this claim only told a "half-side of truth."

What does he mean by that?

Well, Danbo says that Apple will indeed hold an event sometime this month, but it will be a "strange" event rather than an actual hardware launch as first expected.

It's possible that this event will showcase industry-related announcements similar to those made at Apple's iBooks 2 event, which the Cupertino-based company held last month in New York City.

The other event

According to Danbo, Apple will instead launch its iPad 3 in March.

"Special Event for new products will be hold in early March and will release products during March as usual," Danbo said.

The iPad 3 is purported to pack a Retina display and a quad-core A6 processor. Some rumours suggest Apple's forthcoming tablet will also be slightly thicker than its predecessors.

As always, we won't know anything for sure until it comes out of Tim Cooks's mouth.
