Rumour: Sony making 8MP camera for iPhone 5

Stringer spills the beans

Rumour: Sony making 8MP camera for iPhone 5

Howard Stringer has let slip that Sony is making camera components for Apple.

Last week, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, the Sony CEO explained how Sony plants in Sendai had been affected by the Japan quake.

He then went on to say that the image sensors manufactured at Sendai were for Apple products.

This is where things get interesting, because Sony doesn't manufacture components for Apple. At least not for any existing Apple device.

There are, however, long standing rumours that Sony is building an 8-megapixel camera for iPhone 5. These rumours now have more weight.

"It always puzzles me,” Stringer added cryptically, “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

Also, spotting an audience member using an iPad, he joked, “be careful it doesn’t burn you if you wave it around.”

He may be making light of the competition, but this pretty much confirms that, at the very least, Sony is making image sensors for one upcoming Apple device.

iPhone 5? iPad 3? Maybe the next generation iPod nano? Only time will tell.
