Apple rejects seal clubbing app iClubSeal

Apple’s been playing nanny again, this time by rejecting the app iClubSeal for "objectionable content.".

As the title suggests, the aim of the game is to snuff out a bunch of cute seals, using the iPhone’s accelerometer to mimic the act of clubbing. Naturally, it’s all done with a sense of (admittedly black) humour, and there’s no sign of either blood or baby seals at any point.

Developer Matt Smyth obviously takes exception to Apple’s rejection, though he makes a compelling point in his defence:

"They [Apple] allow other apps, like Trophy Hunt for bear and deer and whatnot. I don't see the difference between killing a seal and killing a deer."

We think he’s trying to highlight yet another case of Apple's inconsistency. Either that or he feels that all animals should be open to violent abuse.

Probably the first one.

Smyth is a resident of Newfoundland, Canada, which has a rather more open approach to seal culling than Apple’s home state of California.

Meanwhile, PETA has responded with understandable joy to the rejection, despite being all to familiar with Steve Jobs’s icy shoulder.

“Sure, Apple banned our Be Nice to Bunnies app after catching a glimpse of sexy Stephanie Pratt in the buff,” said Jennifer O'Connor, “but PETA doesn't hold it against Steve Jobs. In fact, we think that Jobs and the rest of the Apple crew are pretty great after learning that the App Store said "no way" to an app called iSealClub—a game in which users wield a metal-tipped club and earn points by bashing seals to death.”

So there’ll be no sick, morally repugnant seal clubbing action for you iPhone owners. You’ll just have to content yourself with shooting people in the head, instead.
