Apple will unveil its iPhone 4.0 update today at 6pm GMT, and rumours about what it will contain are still flying.

Industry analyst Shaw Wu, from Kaufman Bros, has made three predictions about what the update will include which, if they come to pass, could make for some exciting changes to the device.

The predictions are:

  • That Apple will introduce background running support for third-party apps. This long sought after functionality would expand the device’s ability to run multiple applications – especially important for iPad.
  • That Apple’s “revolutionary” ‘iAd’ mobile advertising network will go live. This could have an interesting bearing on multiple pricing strategies for apps, similar to Spotify’s subscription versus adverts model. The upshot could be more free games.
  • And best of all, that Apple will announce new features for games developers which build on existing APIs. This could mean more advanced games, both in terms of content and graphics.

Obviously, this is simply (educated) conjecture for now, but make sure you visit Pocket Gamer from 6pm onward for live updates.
