Apple corrals lite versions into 'Try Before You Buy' section on the App Store

Now it's easier to find demos

Apple corrals lite versions into 'Try Before You Buy' section on the App Store

Free gaming is one of the things that makes the App Store great, and the Top Free section is a first port of call for many.

The free game has a couple of slightly less well-behaved cousins, though, like the sleazy advergame and the tricky freemium game, which doesn't make you pay for content but lets you know what you're missing if you don't.

Then there's the lite version, which is essentially a demo. Most publishers use lite versions in the same way demos have always been used – to give the player a taste of a game in the hope that he'll be unable to resist a full portion.

Apple has corralled all these lite versions together in a new section on the App Store called Try Before You Buy, which you can find by going to 'Featured'> 'Hot New Games'> 'Try Before You Buy'.

Is it any good? Not especially – although the new section provides another way to find lite versions of games, it doesn't provide anything that wasn't available before.

If you were expecting an Apple equivalent of Google's Android Market 24 hour refund policy – which you might given the wording of the section's title – then you'll be disappointed.

The new section doesn't appear to be live on the UK App Store.
