Apple pulls popular sex offender location app

Apple has pulled another popular app from its App Store, but this time the only surprise is that it was allowed on there in the first place. Sex Offender showed you the location of any convicted sex offenders in your area.

The app had been available since June, during which time it found itself in the top 10 paid for apps on a number of occasions.

It’s been suggested that its status as a paid app is what led to Sex Offender being pulled, rather than any sense of social responsibility on Apple’s part. Under California law, selling private information about any individual is strictly prohibited.

Apple seems to be going from one extreme to the other with its attitude to censorship. The fact that an app titled Sex Offender could apparently slip through its screening process casts yet further doubt on the system it employs.
