iPhone gains ground in US as Android falters

But the green robot still dominates

iPhone gains ground in US as Android falters

It's fair to say that if we're talking market share, Android has pretty much 'won' that battle in the United States.

With over half of all mobile devices in the US, Australia, and many of the major European territories running Google's OS, you'd have to be a particularly blinkered Apple fanatic to deny its current dominance of the smartphone scene.

However, reports from Strategy Analytics suggest that the little green robot may be reaching saturation point, with sales of 'droid devices from the various Android OEMs slowing in the last quarter compared to the same period in 2011.

Unfortunately for Windows Phone fans, that doesn't mean the long-awaited resurgence of Nokia is underway. Instead, it's Google's arch-OS nemesis Apple that appears to have benefitted from the slight decline in Android fortunes.

Hit me with the numbers

According to the sales statistics published today, Android's share of the US market fell from 60.6 per cent to 56.3 per cent last quarter, with Apple gaining ground as a result (from 23.2 per cent to 33.2 per cent).

It's predicted that The Big A will continue to gain ground in the next few months, too, with pretty much everyone now certain that the next iPhone will be released in September.
