Every day, about 200,000 smartphones and tablet devices running the Android operating system are sold, according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

As the two and a half year-old mobile OS has quickly caught up with Apple, and rapidly closed the iPhone’s North American lead, Schmidt says, "It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but an incredibly phenomenal success in its growth rate," speaking at a panel yesterday.

In America, Android OS topped the list of smartphone OS use in the second quarter, with a third of all smartphones sold from April to June running Google’s software. BlackBerry slid to second, and iPhone came in third.

The search engine behemoth turned smartphone giant doesn’t see gaming as a large, focus though. Schmidt would not comment on the rumours of the firm’s partnership with Zynga or a new service to compete with Facebook, but says the company’s gaming output would be mostly social-based experiences.

"In general, we always believe that our products would be better with more social signals."
