Report: Android outselling iPhone in US
|

US research firm The Nielsen Company has released its latest findings about smartphone sales.

For those of you without a PhD in applied mathematics, we'll break its discoveries down into three bite-sized chunks.

Firstly, the American smartphone market continues to grow at pace. iPhones, Desires, Droid Xs, and their ilk now make up an impressive quarter of all US mobile phone sales.

Secondly, in the most recent three-month period (April - June) covered by the Nielsen researchers, the quantity of Android phones sold in America outnumbered iPhones.

Google’s increasingly popular platform acquired 27 per cent of those recent US subscribers compared to Apple’s 23 per cent, although Nielsen's figures only include a week of iPhone 4 sales.

Steve Jobs can take solace from the fact that iOS still possesses a higher overall share of the US market, though, second only to RIM’s BlackBerry OS.

And finally, whilst Android’s sales reach may be widening and its operating system maturing very nicely, the iPhone remains the most lusted-after handset of them all.

After polling a few peeps who are considering switching phones, a frankly remarkable 90 per cent of current iPhone users wouldn’t dream of giving up their Apple device.

Android’s loyalty among potential switchers lies at a still reassuring 71 per cent in comparison to BlackBerry’s disappointing 42 per cent.
