G1 Android OS update imminent, Cupcake nears
T-Mobile has a bun in the oven
Android started pretty well, but it’s rapidly losing momentum. All the fancy new handsets we were promised have failed to appear, and the threat to the iPhone hasn’t exactly resulted in blood (or battery fluid) shed.
But T-Mobile is apparently still keen to keep its original Android handset, the G1, up to speed as a couple of new Google powered phones begin to trickle out. The official Android 1.5 SDK just went out to developers, which brings us one step closer to the fabled Cupcake update.
“T-Mobile has released a comprehensive software update that brings its innovative handset into line with the latest Android platform development,” reads a statement from the G1 provider.
“It comes with new functions, loads of enhancements, and more improvements to the design of most input screens. From the beginning of May, T‑Mobile will be shipping new handsets with this latest software, and will offer existing T‑Mobile G1 customers the mobile update for download with an automatic installation over the air and free of charge.”
These improvements include orientation auto-sensing (switching the G1 into landscape mode even when the keyboard’s closed), an onscreen virtual keyboard, video recording with direct uploading to YouTube (nice), direct access to Picassa Web Albums, an upgraded Bluetooth interface for headsets and cars and a bunch of much needed interface tweaks.
Beginning of May, eh? Sweet (tee hee!).
