Tornado.io has been doing big numbers on the US and UK App Store of late.

I've downloaded and played the game a little, and it's a reasonably fun .io game with a twist. Quite literally, as it happens, what with that tornado theme.

But you can do better. Much better, in fact. Fans of the game who have reached the end of their time with game and are looking for something similar are in luck. There's loads of great stuff out there.

Check out these Tornado.io alternatives.

1
Donut County

Developer: Little Flag
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Adventure, Puzzle, Virtual Pet/Toy

Donut County

Tornado.io has a whimsical aesthetic and a 'suck everything up in rural America' premise. One other game that's done something similar of late is Donut County.

Rather than being massively multiplayer, Donut County is a solo pursuit with lots of charming little challenges. It's almost a puzzler, but with absolutely no frustration.

In terms of polish, playability, charm and sheer fun, there really is no contest. Donut County is one of the games of the year.

2
Amazing Katamari Damacy

Publisher: Namco Bandai Networks Europe
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Arcade, Endless running

Amazing Katamari Damacy

The mother of all zany 'eat everything and grow' games (at least in a modern context) was Katamari Damacy. While there isn't a strict mobile conversion of that 2004 PlayStation 2 classic, there is a Katamari mobile game.

Amazing Katamari takes the form of an endless runner, but at its core is that irresistible mechanic. Your little prince rolls a little ball through an endless stretch of ground.

Anything that gets in your way gets rolled up, making your ball grow - which lets you roll up bigger objects. Which is much like Tornado.io, but with way more charm.

3
AXE.IO

Publisher: Crescent Moon Games
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Multiplayer

AXE.IO

Axe.io doesn't have the 'hoover everything up' mechanic, but it is another colourful .io game. And for our money, it's a better game than Tornado.io.

Here you play an axe-chucking viking, who must wage war on their fellow warriors from around the globe.

There's a chunkiness and a level of polish that most throw-away .io games don't have. Check it out, if you haven't already.

4
Agar.io

Publisher: Miniclip
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, Multiplayer
Find out more about Agar.io
Agar.io

Of course, at the heart of it all, Tornado.io is aping the daddy of .io games - Agar.io.

The original game had you roaming about an open arena, eating up smaller entities with your ever-growing force of nature. Sound familiar?

It's more than three years old now, so there's a chance some of you won't have played Agar.io. It looks quite basic these days, but it's lost none of its simple charm.
