Updated October 31st to refresh games. Previously by Jon Mundy.

As if 2021 hasn't been horrific enough, here comes Halloween to make a tacky song dance out of our impending mortality.

Sunday October 31st will see kids taking to the streets to bully adults into giving them sugary treats. Some of those adults will defend themselves by inviting friends around and playing loud music and drinking too much.

Maybe you revel in such nonsense, or maybe none of it is for you. Either way, here are some mobile games to get you in the halloween spirit - or to help you pass it in a slightly more sedate fashion.

Don't be scared. We don't bite.

Night Book

If you are looking to genuinely be terrified this Halloween, look no further. Night Book is a thriller that puts you directly into a realistic horror movie, including all of the frights and issues this can cause.

You can become translator, letting out a mysterious, cursed dead language, and being haunted because of it.

Best played: In the dark, alone, to ensure you have night terrors.

2
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Endless running
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location

Five Nights at Freddy's has a collection of different games you can choose from, and frankly, any of them are worth playing on Halloween. However, we selected this specific game to add to our list.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location is equally at home on either list. Its jump scares were perfect for a Friday 13th, but it's also got that ghoulish carnival ride thing going on that smacks of Halloween.

Best played: If your Halloween isn't complete until you've jumped out of your skin at least three times.

3
Grim Fandango Remastered

Publisher: Double Fine
Available on: iOS + PS Vita + Steam
Genre: Adventure

Grim Fandango Remastered

Of course, your Halloween-related mobile game doesn't have to be scary. In fact it can be thoroughly charming, like this conversion of an all time LucasArts point-and-click adventure great.

Grim Fandango is set in a weird underworld that's heavily influenced by the Mexican Day of the Dead, but shot through with elements of film noir.

Best played: If you prefer to be tickled than traumatised this Halloween.

4
Corpse Party

Publisher: Xseed Games
Available on: iOS + PSP
Genre: Adventure

Corpse Party

Here's another game that made our list for its schlocky kids-getting-slaughtered theme.

It's precisely that unsettling combination of kids, grisly death, and the supernatural that makes this brilliant sleuthing RPG such a natural fit for Halloween, too.

Best played: If you're sick of pumpkins and skellingtons and wish your Halloween to be genuinely screwed up.

5
Costume Quest

Developer: Double Fine
Available on: iOS + Steam
Genre: RPG

Costume Quest

Is your Halloween all set to suck like Nosferatu? Maybe you're having a quiet one, or have been let down at the last minute.

Allow Costume Quest to show you the kind of magical Halloween that you would never have been able to have. Set on the night itself, you play a cute trick-or-treater embarking on an enchanting RPG adventure with your buddies.

Best played: If your Halloween is set to be wash out - intentionally or not.
