As Honor’s new flagship phone targeted at the high-end smartphone market, the Honor 8 Pro has many of the features you’d expect of a device in this class range.

Which is great news if you’re heading out on a holiday and are packing light.

Camera

One of the most important things for a trip away, other than your passport, is taking photos. The Honor 8 Pro features an impressive 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual rear-facing camera to take sharp HD photos and record videos in 4K.

The 64GB of storage for all your photos, videos and other apps helps ensure there’s enough space to capture those memorable moments.

Features such as wide aperture mode enable you to take some professional-looking photos and focus in on a particular subject, blurring the background. This useful for if you don’t have an expensive camera for the job. You can also adjust depth of field after the fact by heading into the image edit options.

Another useful feature if you’ve been on lots of trips but haven’t organised your pictures – the Honor 8 Pro can automatically group photos based on where you’ve been and who you were with.

Performance

Personally, I like to be able to play games on the go when I’m travelling around. Smartphones in general are great for this, and the Honor 8 Pro is no exception.

It contains a Huawei EMUI 5.1 960 octa-core processor (4x2.4GHz + 4x1.8GHz), Mali-G71 GPU and 6GB of RAM. It also supports the Vulkan API to deliver game performance improvements over its predecessor, that based on Open GL. This means you can play the latest mobile games without worrying about performance issues.

Virtual reality

Included with the Honor 8 Pro is a Google Cardboard headset. You probably aren’t thinking of taking your VR experience out of the home, but given how it’s already packed in the box and doesn’t take up much luggage space, it offers a nice option for VR experiences while you’re away.

Battery life

Underlying all of these features is the battery life. The device packs a 4,000 mAh battery that's said to last for 2 whole days of regular use according to Honor lab tests.*

Ultimately, for a trip away, it’s one of the most important aspects of a good smartphone.

While it can last a reasonably long time through intensive use, perhaps the most interesting features here are the powering save mode and ‘Ultra’ power saving mode, which are incredibly useful if you’re out and about and need your phone to last the distance.

Oh, and it comes with a headphone jack so you can listen to music, watch videos and play games without bothering your fellow travellers.
