Jelly Bean - will your Android get something sweet to chew on?

Jelly Bean - will your Android get something sweet to chew on?
|

The latest version of the Android OS, Jelly Bean, is something of a refinement of the great step forward that was Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

There's a reason it's called Android 4.1 rather than Android 5.0.

Still, that doesn't mean it's not a highly desirable upgrade, especially with its "buttery smooth" improvements to general responsiveness.

The trouble, as always, is knowing when - and even if - Jelly Bean will be coming to your 'droid handset. Join us as we scour the depths of the internet to list the handsets that will be getting a taste of Jelly Bean - as well as those that definitely aren't.

Naturally, all of these are subject to change, according to the whims of the various Android vendors. Also bear in mind that enough customer fury can make even the mightiest of manufacturers perform a volte-face.

Here's what we know.

Acer

Rumoured for Jelly Bean:

  • Iconia Tab A110
  • Iconia Tab A200
  • Iconia Tab A510
  • Iconia Tab A700

While there's been no official confirmation, recent word on the webvine is that Acer will be bringing Jelly Bean to its recently launched Iconia Tab tablet range.

Given that the Taiwanese manufacturer is in a perpetual deathmatch with compatriot Asus - who we will discuss in the following paragraphs - we're inclined to believe these rumours.

Asus

Confirmed for Jelly Bean:

  • Transformer Pad
  • Transformer Pad Prime
  • Transformer Pad Infinity

The surprise Android success story of recent years, Asus has swiftly catapulted itself into the tablet elite with the Google Nexus 7 - which is, of course, the lead device for Jelly Bean.

Even before this, Asus was turning out some excellent devices via the Transformer Pad range. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that all of the Transformer Pad tabs have been confirmed for a Jelly Bean upgrade.

All, that is, except for the original Eee Pad Transformer. It seems Asus hasn't quite made its mind up on that one yet.

HTC

Confirmed for Jelly Bean:

  • One X
  • One S
  • One XL

HTC is one of the few manufacturers to come out and offer confirmation that its current high-end smartphone range will be updated to Jelly Bean. The lovely One X, as well as the almost-as-lovely One S and One XL (which isn't out in the UK), will all get the update at some point or another.

There's no word yet on whether any of the older HTC devices will be getting Jelly Bean, though. Considering how long it takes HTC to get new versions of the Android OS working with its bulky Sense UI, we wouldn't hold our breath for a swift turnaround.

Of course, the likes of the HTC Sensation - last year's flagship HTC device - are more than capable of running Jelly Bean, as are the HTC Incredible S and Desire S. Stay tuned.

We're pretty sure that one device in particular won't be getting Jelly Bean: the HTC Desire HD. This follows the confirmation from HTC that it wouldn't be getting updated to ICS due to a limitation to the device's storage. As Jelly Bean is closely related to ICS, it's safe to say the same applies.

LG

Rumoured for Jelly Bean:

  • Optimus 4X HD
  • Optimus 3D Max
  • Optimus L7

South Korea's other major phone manufacturer is still churning out respectable Android devices despite the relentless onslaught from those noisy well-to-do neighbours Samsung.

As for its Jelly Bean plans, well, they're somewhere between rumour and official confirmation.

What do we mean? Back in February, an LG spokesman provided a bold guarantee that all of its 2012 Android handsets would get an upgrade to the new Android OS, provided they had the technical chops to handle it.

This makes us pretty confident that the above trio of handsets will get the upgrade. LG sources have unofficially revealed that the rollout will begin in Q4 2012.

Sadly, it seems the Optimus 2X (the first-ever dual-core smartphone) and the Optimus Black will not be getting a taste of Jelly Bean. That's if the official LG Canada Twitter account is to be believed. And who doesn't trust those loveable Canadians?

Motorola

Confirmed for Jelly Bean:

  • Motorola Xoom

Motorola has begun rolling out Jelly Bean to the original Motorola Xoom already. This may seem a little strange given the device's distinctly underwhelming performance (in every regard).

Keep in mind, though, that this is the tablet Google threw its weight behind when the Nexus 7 was just a twinkle in The Big G's eye. Oh, and that Google owns Motorola. Nearly forgot that one.

Rather curiously, given that last point, the Google-owned manufacturer hasn't said anything about bringing Jelly Bean to its existing roster of Android phones.

Samsung

Rumoured for Jelly Bean:

  • Galaxy S3
  • Galaxy S2

Samsung hasn't made any definitive statements on which of its devices will be getting Jelly Bean, but it has let the world know that it's working on it.

Still, it's pretty safe to assume the Samsung Galaxy S III will be at the front of the queue for the update - especially given the company's chumminess with Google. The South Korean tech giant did manufacture the last two Nexus devices, after all.

Rumour has it that the Samsung Galaxy S II will also get a slice of the Jelly Bean pie, and again this makes perfect sense. Not only is the Galaxy S II one seriously capable phone, but it's also one of the most popular handsets of the last few years. It certainly runs ICS well, which is a good sign.

Expect to see Jelly Bean hitting the Galaxy S III once the original Nexus S has had its turn (which should be any day now). You can also expect the Galaxy Note to get the update, given it's basically a blown-up Galaxy Nexus and has also sold like hotcakes.

Related to that point, there's a rumour going around that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will launch with Jelly Bean pre-installed this October.

Sony Mobile / Sony Ericsson

Rumoured for Jelly Bean:

  • Xperia Arc
  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia Play
  • Xperia Neo
  • Xperia Ray
  • Xperia Mini
  • Xperia S
  • Xperia U
  • Xperia P

We'd say the three devices at the bottom of that list are near-shoo-ins for Jelly Bean - they're the most recent devices from Sony, and they all feature nippy dual-core processors.

Don't completely discount 2011's Sony Ericsson Xperia devices, though. A recent PR gaffe forced Sony to announce that it was looking at the possibility of bringing Jelly Bean to all of its Xperia devices - including the 2011 line-up.

Of course, this is far from confirmation that the other handsets will get Jelly Bean - most haven't even got ICS yet.

Though we've listed it, we'd be surprised if the Xperia Mini got a taste of Jelly Bean, given its tiny screen. Android 4.x is big on large high-def screens.

The rest

Let's not forget the other, lower-profile companies out there producing Android devices. In truth, we considered promoting ZTE to full manufacturer status given the huge strides it's made over the past year.

It's produced a Jelly Bean device already, in fact, but that's unlikely to leave China. There's no news at all on when (or if) its other phones, like the ZTE Grand X, will get an update to Android 4.1, either, so we'll just give ZTE this quick mention for now.

Confirmed for Jelly Bean:

  • ZTE N880E (China only)

Rumoured for Jelly Bean:

  • Toshiba AT200
  • Toshiba AT300
  • Toshiba AT270
