With PSP designed as much as a fashion item as a gaming device, it makes complete sense for Sony to release limited edition versions. First to be revealed is what Sony Japan calls its ceramic white PSP. Unsurprisingly this is a standard PSP but white rather than black. A white hand strap and accessory pouch and cloth will also be sold separately, with both being released on 15 September only in Japan.

In addition, an update of the PSP’s operating system will be released in Japan on 27 July. This firmware update - moving from v1.52 to v2 - will allow you to browse the Internet for the first time, thanks to the addition of a simple web browser. This means you will be able to connect to the Internet from any wi-fi hotspot although the browser won’t support websites using more complex technology such as Macromedia’s Flash.

Other new abilities include the option to send photos to other PSP owners using wi-fi, set your own photos as wallpaper on your PSP and support for the TIFF high resolution photo file format.

As yet there is no news when the new white PSP will be available in the UK and Europe. The good news however is that PSP firmwave v2 is expected to come as standard for UK and Europe PSPs when it’s launched on 1 September.
