Winds of Destiny - Duels of the Magi is a retro tactical card brawler for Android

Winds of Destiny - Duels of the Magi isn't quite what you'd expect with a name like that.

It's a side-on, one vs one magical scrapper that sees you hurling cards and spells at your foe, chipping away at their life bar and trying to keep as much energy on yours as you can.

And not to put too fine a point on it, it's a bit gorgeous. The pixel-art graphics are wonderfully polished, and the whole look of the game is refined to a decidedly retro sheen. It's like viewing the world through a Mega Drive's eyes.

Each round of the turn-based brawls sees you given five cards. Some of these can be used to power up your spell bar, some are potions or defensive buffs, but most of them are numbers.

These represent damaging attacks you can whomp your foe with.

You choose three of the cards, tap done, and the action plays out. Flurries of flame burst from your fingers, giant axes smash down on your enemy, and magic barriers form around you.

There are 8 characters to pick from, with a 9th unlockable as you play. You can take on the AI in single battles or a campaign mode, and connect with friends to play head-to-head.

Winds of Destiny - Duels of the Magi is out right now on the Google Play Store. A free version gets you a chunk of the game for nowt [download], while the full version will set you back 60p / 99c [buy].
