Kickstarter launches for Final Fantasy Tactics director's Unsung Story

Yasumi Matsuno is a name that's come up a lot around here lately.

You might know him as the man responsible for directing Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, or - lately - the underrated 3DS eShop gem Crimson Shroud.

Now, Matsuno is looking to release his latest project Unsung Story for iOS, Android, 3DS, and the PS Vita... assuming that it can drum up anywhere between $600,000 - $2.8 million in Kickstarter funding, that is.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians aims to re-imagine the classic tactical RPG genre by casting players not as 'the' hero of a massive war but rather as 'a' hero of said war.

Each hero's tale spans a single episode, but some episodes might span multiple years, a decade, or even longer.

Thankfully, the war in question is referred to as the Seventy-Seven Years War - so you won't be pressed for time on the longer campaigns.

Players will also be able to bring these unsung heroes (see what they did there?) to life with their actions and decisions, which means you'll have an active hand in the direction the story takes.

An epic quest

So far, all we have to go on for Unsung Story are a few pieces of concept art and a rough plan for the game.

Firstly, it'll actually be two games. The first is a digital card game that's due out later this year aimed at introducing players to the world of Unsung Story.

The second game is a proper turn-based tactics affair fought on a 3D-landscape with a player-controller camera. Units have individual professions, and each profession has multiple classes within it.

Playdek notes that the richer, planned version of Unsung Story will spring into life for iOS and Android if it can raise $600,000 over on Kickstarter. At $1.3 million, Final Fantasy Tactics composer Hitoshi Sakimoto will join the project to compose the OST.

For those eager to get this on their handhelds, you'll have to hope the campaign hits $1.8 million for the PS Vita and $2.8 million for the 3DS.
