How to master Tower Rumble’s campaign mode

Tower Rumble is indie developer Neo Realms’ first foray into the mobile market.

Ambitiously fusing together mechanics from tower defence, match 3 and battle arena genres, it’s a vibrant strategy-action game with a light-hearted fantasy narrative. You take control of an army in Artyficia, a fractious land plagued by greedy stewards vying for power. You must pit your towers’ defences against your opponents, launching spells to assist your troops in pushing ahead.

There are two main gameplay modes – Arcade and Campaign. Arcade is a simpler, more immediate way to play, whilst Campaign adds more micromanagement and is story-driven. This guide will help you get to grips with the basics of Campaign mode so you can show your foe who’s boss!

Ready the troops

Before starting a campaign, you must choose your initial 3-skill column. These skills will be the only ones you take with you, though you can acquire more as you progress through the campaign. Each skill gives you different advantages, so choose wisely.

You can then select a campaign mission and assign which troops you’d like to send out for battle. Campaign mode differs from Arcade mode because you have a finite number of troops – so you can tweak the troop columns to change the balance of your army, or have an equal number of each type of soldier.

Different campaigns will challenge you with different battlefield conditions, so make sure you check the top right of the screen to see if any apply – it could make a difference to how you choose to play. Every campaign features a unique storyline about the weird and wonderful characters of Artyficia, though the goal is the same throughout – finish each mission before your turns run out.

Rewards

To the victor the spoils. To the loser… not so much.

If you successfully complete a campaign mission, you’ll receive chests that award you gold, army skills or troops. If you’re unsuccessful, you might be punished with a broken chest that can take away gold, skills and troops – so make sure you’re ready for battle by upgrading your army as you progress.

Mining

Of course, upgrading your army costs resources. You can get more gold for just that in the mining mini-game. During a round of mining, you’ve got 60 seconds to crack as many boulders as possible using destructive purple spells. Boulders have different gold values, with the greatest rewards gleaned from smashing the ones that resemble fossils. One of the boulders contains a helpful time extension, and soldiers you’ve brought along will mine along with you for extra gold.

There is a limit to how many times you can mine during each campaign, though, and each round of mining uses a turn.

Spending your loot

Hey big spender, spend a little gold on troops. Otherwise, expect a haul of broken chests coming your way.

You can use your gold in the Recruit Troops area to unlock abilities, replenish fallen soldiers, recruit more troops, buy power-ups and unlock traps.

Or to improve your army manually, go to the Improve Army area where you’ll notice four sections. The first section is your soldier skills – keep these levelled up so you can take on bigger, tougher campaigns. The second is your spell power – each spell colour can be upgraded individually so your combos are even more effective. The third category is where you can improve your siege weapons, champion and gold spawn rates, tower hitpoints and charisma.

Hunting for artefacts

The final section in the Improve Army area shows you your artefacts. Artefacts provide you with a number of free army levels and skills to add to your inventory. The downside is you don’t have control over which levels and skills they contain.

You can retrieve artefacts by dipping into the Infinity Vault – a battle arena pitting your army against hordes of opponents. Win enough battles and the artefact is yours. Alternatively, you can hire treasure hunters to find them for you using contracts. Contracts are available from the main screen.
