The Tony Hawk games were never really about freedom. They were about finding the best line in a finite space, and chaining together tricks to keep your score ticking over for as long as possible.

That's sort of what Shred Session is about, but it's a far more linear experience. This is over-the-shoulder endless running, but with a skateboard stuck on your feet.

The game is sliced up into challenges. Some of them are about pulling tricks, which you do by swiping a finger around the screen. Others are about grabbing glowing orbs, or getting to the finish line before time runs down.

There are some neat ideas here though. Some levels are about scoring as many points as you can on a half-pipe, while others see you trying to replicate another skater's tricks as you roll down the game's three-lane corridors.

You can find out more about Tony Hawk's Shred Session in the hands-on video above. It's out right now in New Zealand, and we expect it to be hitting the rest of the world before summer is done.
