Flora and the Darkness and Protostrike were the runners up at the Very Big Indie Pitch at PGC Helsinki 2017

Sadly, not every game can walk away a winner at the Very Big Indie Pitch, and there was some seriously stiff competition at this year's event during Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki last week.

So runners up Flora and the Darkness and Protostrike can consider themselves winners, in a way, as they successfully batted off 22 other games to make it into the final group. That's no easy feat.

To celebrate this year's runners up, we're going to highlight exactly why they're awesome and should be on your radar.

Flora and the Darkness

Flora and the Darkness is a gorgeous platformer in which you play as the little light girl, Flora. She just so happens to be the only person who can save the world from the invading darkness.

Darkness has literally covered the planet and even touching it will destroy Flora. So it's up to you to help guide her as she leaps across chasms and harnesses the power of plants to traverse across the world and, ultimately, save it.

You might know developer 1DER Entertainment best from the gorgeous Tiny Archers or SirVival. Flora and the Darkness follows in the footsteps of those two with equally stunning visuals.

Protostrike

Protostrike is a multiplayer shooter that plays a lot like a MOBA. You'll dash about, shooting enemies, and using skills to gain the upper hand.

Elevation plays a huge part here. You've got a jump button, and can use it to leap on top of, or across, platforms to get around the battlefield with speed.

Using that is the key to victory. Well, aside from killing everyone before they kill you, of course. There's also a crafting system that you can use to equip and modify a variety of weapons.
