Battle of Polytopia partners with DeepMind to bring matches against AI to the next level

The future is truly here as The Battle of Polytopia becomes part of DeepMind’s open-ended platform, AndroidEnv. Swedish indie developer Midjiwan's turn-based civilisation-style strategy game can now prove its worth among clever brainiacs in a true test of intellectual prowess against AI.

As DeepMind’s AI responds to the challenge in The Battle of Polytopia, players can engage in matches set in a charming low poly world with even higher stakes. The square-shaped environment features 16 tribes with three different game modes - Perfection, Domination, and Creative. Players will have to develop their own empire and best their foes in 30-minute game sessions against other intellectuals - only this time, DeepMind’s AI will step up to the plate.

We are of course very happy about this. DeepMind is a giant within AI with a fantastic platform that we are very proud and excited to be a part of,” says Midjiwan General Manager Christian Lövstedt. “We have noticed that Polytopia is particularly popular among so-called brainiacs, but this will be the start of something completely new when we are taking on artificial intelligence.”

If you’re not familiar with DeepMind, this artificial intelligence company was founded by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman back in 2010. Since then, it has been challenging the boundaries of what AI can accomplish, with Google officially acquiring the company in 2014.

In line with this, Demis Hassabis, founder and CEO of DeepMind, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership in a Tweet: “So excited for this, can't wait to see how our AI does on the strategic gem Polytopia, one of my favourite mobile games!”

Polytopia has been installed over 14 million times worldwide to date. You can join in on the fun and see what all the fuss is about over on the App Store and on Google Play.
