It's rare that a mobile platform game comes up with an idea that makes you go "ooh," but that's the exact response that Terrible Tower for Android eilicited from me today.

At first glance it's a pretty standard platformer. You stomp around jungle temple-y levels, collecting coins and power-ups and avoiding spikes and other obstacles.

Then you get to a platform you can't reach. And you walk off the edge of whatever ground you're stood on and tumble down the bottom of the screen, only to emerge back at the top.

It's an odd mechanic, but it makes for a really interesting experience. You're constantly dropping off the screen to land somewhere new.

There's even a bit of mild-puzzling, as you work out the best place to leap and the safest place to land.

You're constantly trying to climb farther up the titular tower. For the first few tries you'll be lucky to make it more than ten metres, but with a bit of practice you'll do much better.

The controls are a bit sticky, and on anything with a screen less than four or-so inches you're probably going to be blocking a lot of the action with your meaty human thumbs.

It's not the best looking game either, but there's still a bright charm to things, and since it doesn't cost anything it feels a bit churlish to complain.

Terrible Tower is well worth a look if you're after a simple platformer that's got a little more to it than meets the eye.

You can grab it by clicking the Google Play link at the bottom of the page.
