How Spider Solitaire reinvents the traditional card game for mobile

As the familiar expression dictates: “everything old is new again”. And unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, you’ll have noticed that the same can swiftly be said for certain releases found on the App Store and Google Play. Two platforms more than familiar with providing players a suite of traditional/classical games, most come redefined for the modern mobile era, implementing their own unique twists to improve the on-the-go play experience.

Continuing this popular trend is Forsbit’s take on the classic card-based skill game, Spider Solitaire. Available now for both iOS and Android devices, this distinctive spin on one of the world’s most popular card games touts a web of 21st century features. All hoping to entangle you with plenty of brain-stretching gameplay, should you ever find yourself with a few minutes to spare. Let’s take a closer look at some of them:

The basic rules

Before we get started on the good stuff, it’s worth noting that in Spider Solitaire, the same classic card-stacking game you love is alive and well. The objective of the game is to create same-suit rows of cards (between 1 – 4 depending on your chosen difficulty level), one per suit in ascending order.
The challenge comes in trying to keep stacking the cards until you’re unable to move any longer. One of the few card-based games intended to be played independently, Spider Solitaire intends to make the concept popular for both new and familiar players alike.

Multiple game modes

As alluded to earlier, Spider Solitaire removes some of the stresses that can arise in a typical game of solitaire by offering multiple difficulty levels, making it easy for players to steadily ramp up the skill level required as they continue to improve. The way Spider Solitaire does this is via selectable suit games.
Simple 1 suit games are ideal for those just starting off or hoping to relax, while 2 - 4 suit modes ratchet up the challenge, demanding an extra level of puzzle-solving skill. Go in head first or take things slowly, the choice is yours.

Quality of life features

As for Spider Solitaire’s controls, Forsbit has attempted to simplify the entire process. Traditional “drag and drop” means that whenever you pick a card, all that’s needed is to drag it into position. But the game also makes use of a “Tap to move” feature where you just tap a card to let it jump into suitable place automatically. That speeds up and streamlines gameplay, essential for short plays sessions.

More useful features make themselves known in the form of highlighting, making nay card stacks that can be moved easily identifiable. As well as this, if columns of stacked cards ever become too long, they are automatically spaced closer to fit on screen and spaced out when you make a move. The mobile solitaire experience has been refined just a little bit further again in Spider Solitaire.

Social network integration

Forsbit knows that honing your card-stacking skills will mean nothing if you’re unable to brag about them, layering into Spider Solitaire a slew of score-sharing social network features.

Work your way up the ranks, compare, and improve, before finally sharing them either via Twitter, Facebook, or e-mail. And when that’s not enough, Spider Solitaire’s Global Game Centre leader board to see how you stack up with others internationally.
