Gamescom '12: Sony announces PlayStation Mobile, Asus and Wikipad to release PlayStation Certified devices
Farewell, Playstation Suite
Sony's Gamescom presentation had a great many surprises for PS Vita owners, but it also contained an unexpected announcement for mobile gamers in general.
While Sony officially rebranded the PlayStation Suite as PlayStation Mobile (as expected), SCEE's Jim Ryan stated that the aim of the service is to bring small-scale gaming to a wider variety of devices.
To accomplish this ambitious goal, Sony announced a partnership with Asus and Wikipad as the newest manufacturers of PlayStation Certified hardware, but it did not name any specific devices from either manufacturer that would be compatible with PlayStation Mobile.
From Vita to tablet and back againPerhaps more interesting than the unexpected partnership with Asus is the fact that players can begin playing a game on one PlayStation Certified device, save their progress, and resume it on another (assuming they use the same PSN ID).
Thus, if a gamer on the go begins a game on their Asus tablet and saves it they can pick it up later on their Vita.
Sony closed out the announcement of PlayStation Mobile by promising its customers a wide variety of games for the newly rebranded service from both major developers and smaller, more independent shops.
One stand-out game is Vlambeer's frenetic indie title Super Crate Box, which will be coming to PlayStation Mobile soon. Super Crate Box on Vita? Count us in.
