Sony announces new Tegra-3 powered Xperia Tablet S

Just ahead of the official opening of the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, Sony has announced the Xperia Tablet S, a Tegra 3-powered, 9.4-inch tablet running Android 4.0.3 (a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich).

The successor to last year's Tablet S, Sony's Xperia Tablet S retains the distinctive 'folded magazine' style of its predecessor and the IR Emitter that allows it to function as an enormous universal remote control.

It's also a PlayStation Certified device, which means it'll be getting access to Sony's new on-the-go gaming service when it launches later in the year. The Tegra 3 chipset inside the tablet means it'll be able to handle pretty much any game you throw at it.

High end, high price

With a screen resolution of 1280x800 and a promised battery life of up to ten hours, the Xperia Tablet S is aimed squarely at the top end of the market. Yes, the one currently dominated by the iPad.

It's in the same price bracket as Apple's touchscreen slate, too, for the cheapest model (with 16GB of internal storage) will cost you $400, while the 32GB and 64GB versions will retail for $500 and $600, respectively.

The Xperia Tablet S will be available to buy from around September 7th, and you should be able to pre-order one directly from Sony pretty darn soon.
