CES 2012: Sony announces 4 new smartphones - Xperia ion, the Xperia S, the Xperia acro HD, and the Xperia NX

Like HTC, Sony Ericsson has used its press conference ahead of the 2012 International CES show in Las Vegas to introduce some new hardware.

Four new smartphones, to be exact - the Xperia ion, the Xperia S, the Xperia acro HD, and the Xperia NX.

Xperia ion

The Xperia ion, which will be available exclusively in the US on AT&T some time in the second quarter of this year, will be Sony's first LTE Xperia smartphone.

The device packs a 4.6-inch HD Reality display, a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of capturing footage in 1080p, and a front-facing camera that can record video in an impressive 720p.

Inside, the Xperia ion houses a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of flash storage.

Xperia S

The Android-powered Xperia S is the first smartphone in Sony's new Xperia NXT series of devices.

Like the Xperia ion, the Xperia S will boast a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of snapping 1080p footage and a front-facing snapper capable of 720p, as well as a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Finally, the smartphone packs a 4.3-inch display, 32GB of flash storage, the ability to easily share content across multiple screens, and NFC technology.

Both the ion and the Xperia S are also PlayStation-certified phones.

Xperia acro HD and Xperia NX

The Xperia acro HD has been designed especially for the Japanese market and includes many Japan-specific features like infrared port data exchange, mobile wallet, and mobile TV.

The Xperia NX is simply described as a "variant of Xperia S for the Japanese market", so we're presuming it's essentially the same thing with a different name.

Both smartphones will hit Japanese shelves in the spring.
