Sony Ericsson expects there to be “hundreds and hundreds” of optimised games for its Xperia Play gaming smartphone by the end of the year.

There are currently more than 50 optimised titles in the Android Market, but Dominic Neil-Dwyer, Sony Ericsson’s head of market development, told Fierce Wireless that the company expects the number to increase once the phone is released.

Xperia Play titles are separate from the games planned for Sony’s Playstation Suite, which is due to be released later this year.

The handset is the first to meet Sony’s certified programme for hardware manufacturers, but Neil-Dwyer said that Sony Ericsson would welcome the competition. "You'd have a bigger installed base for the community. Our aim is to take a leadership position", he explained.

The Xperia Play is due to launch in the UK on the 31st March.
