Sony Xperia Play outed, to be officially announced on Sunday

Sony Ericsson’s fabled and heavily rumoured PlayStation Phone (technically the Xperia Play) has been officially outed by the company. It will be fully detailed at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona on 13th February.

The device is called the Xperia Play, and is the company’s first PlayStation Certified handset. That means it will run games from the PlayStation Suite. The Suite will be initially stocked with retro PS1 classics, and more original content will come later in the year.

Ericsson is leaving the juicy stuff - hopefully including system specs, release date, and price - until MWC. But the offical product shots confirm a few details we already know: it will have a D-pad, six face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and two analogue-stick-style touchpanels on a pull-out panel.

When Engadet previewed a leaked prototype of the device, the tech blog noted it contained a single-core, 1.2 GHz processor, Adreno 205 GPU, 854x480 resolution screen and a 5-megapixel camera. Those are all subject to change, of course.

To celebrate the announcement of its announcement, Sony has put together the following nightmare. I mean video.
